#TuesdayTalks presents ‘Just’ Food Berlin
Organized by Esmé Forbes
Join us for two talks and a performance centered around themes of food justice and food sovereignty.
‘Just’ Food Berlin aims to contribute to a food empowerment discourse in Berlin. Through the sharing of both personal stories and ‘just’ discourses, the event aims to broaden understandings of how sustainable relationships to food can manifest. By dissolving the preconception that sustainability is related solely to one’s environmental impacts or ecological footprint, ‘just’ food incorporates social, cultural, physical, and mental well-being as integral dimensions within sustainable food consumption and production. The word ‘just’ is chosen to describe the event as it refers to the incorporation of a social justice agenda within discourses often centered solely around ‘environmental’ sustainability. Come by as we will bring landless workers rights, race, and queer feminism into discourses of ‘just’ sustainability in food.
20:00 – Paula Gioia on food sovereignty
20:45 – Cerise Carson on poc, eating disorders, and mental health
21:30 – Soya the Cow on queer feminism and animal rights activism through drag
22:00 – Post-discussion Q&A with audience
Paula Gioia is a beekeeper and farmer in a collective farm in the surrounds of Berlin. Together the farm group, she applies agroecological methods to produce food to feed the regional population. Paula is active in the struggles for food sovereignty carried by the global peasants movement La Via Campesina at national and international levels. Paula will be presenting on the concept of food sovereignty, relating it to the movements origins, and discussing her work within it. For more detail into Paula’s work, find her article here on queer feminism in food sovereignty: https://www.zeitschrift-luxemburg.de/queerfeldein/
Hard to describe herself, Cerise Carson lives a non-activism vegan, gluten free life, spreading her knowledge through experience she gained living in both Germany and the South of the US. Food has always played a central role in Cerise’s life: from being a teen pescatarian, developing an eating disorder that lasted over two decades, carrying out a healthy child in her early twenties, moving to South Florida by mid twenty, being diagnosed with Zöliakie due to her eating disorder, to finally finding peace in the statement, “change starts immediately after you find purpose”. Cerise’s current work aims to explore the intersections of race, eating disorders, mental health and self care. Thus, she will be launching >> WE – Within Element<<< an international community, for people of color, by people of color, which creates a voice and platform for poc to share their stories and highlight their differences and similarities relating to eating disorders and mental health. This event will introduce the mission and goals of WE, a platform which will host workshops and create safe spaces to gain strength within your element.
Soya () is a gender- and species-bending drag cow. She unites queer feminist ideas with animal rights activism, high fashion and poetry. Since her debut at the Animal Rights March in front of the legendary Volksbühne Berlin, she appeared in discussion forums and protests. She gives workshops about consent, and performs on stages of theaters and nightclubs, as well as in public space. At the moment she’s also working on her first music album. Soya will be the closing act at be’kech: she will first describe her mission as Soya, followed by a drag performance at the piano.
