► An art workshop exploring the relationship between nudity, vulnerability, shame and alienation.
-Led by Nikita Sena
SEND N(U)DES is an art workshop that seeks to engage with the relationship between nudity, vulnerability, shame and alienation (alienation from our bodies and the bodies of others). We hope to create a space of trust that encourages a reflection on how bodies are political/politicised and can be the starting point from which we learn about the world around us. In particular, we hope to reflect on how these themes play out for bodies that are non-white, queer, trans, fat and are either hyper-sexualised or rendered undesirable by mainstream society.
The following questions will guide the workshop: What is the association between nudity and vulnerability, literally and metaphorically? How does this tie in with feelings of shame, and where/who/what does this shame come from? Who is the spectator and does spectatorship affect the display, use and visibility of our body? How does a fear of our naked bodies tie in with a fear of humiliation? Why should nudity be kept in the private sphere? How does the idea of the spectator restrict the other ways we use our body, particularly in the public sphere? Can a naked body only be erotic? How does this view of our body tie in with other existing constructs?
Most importantly, SEND N(U)DES hopes to develop a space of trust where a diverse group of women can gather together in community to have fun, create art and express themselves.
Attendees bring with them a printed picture of a nude (a concept participants are invited to interpret as explicitly/loosely as they feel comfortable!). These pictures are placed in individual envelopes which are exchanged and then used to inform the artwork created by the recipient. We will provide all materials but also encourage attendees to bring their own supplies if they would like to. The workshop will be preceded and concluded with an open discussion
For womxn only.
